Meet Isabel, a delightful street sweeper in old Havana, Cuba. She is a colorful character and we quickly struck up a conversation – my Spanish is limited but we understood each other just fine! As we were talking I asked if I could take her picture and offered her a “cuc” (local currency) which is customary. At that point she reached into her pocket and put the cigar in her mouth!
So what’s with the cigar? I asked her why Cuban women all seem to smoke cigars and she replied “oh no, solo por la photo” (only for the picture)! Working the very touristy part of the city she is ready with her prop when tourists want to take her picture!
